correspondent carl cameron on the phone from l.a. how is this debate here in california or at least the contest important? >> reporter: for california and mitt romney it's important about the money. he has raised in the last few days around los angeles and san san francisco some $9 million. no one expects him to be competitive in the general election. tomorrow he will be going to colorado and first time he has been there in seven weeks. so much time has been spent fund-raising. he has taken a fair amount of heat from republicans in conveying ideas. he will go to colorado tonight, exactly ten days before the first presidential debate will take place in colorado. its clear signal from the romney campaign they hit the state seriously and they have an opportunity to win. tomorrow paul ryan will kick off a bus tour in ohio and romney will join him on tuesday. leaving los angeles now headed for colorado for the event in denver tonight. remainder of the week he plans to accelerate it pretty hard. this is the first weekend he has worked fund-raising both saturday and sunday in more than a month. there

tonight. first, let's get to carl cammeron he is live in miami. it sounds like governor romney went on the offensive today. >> well, dueling sound bites and campaigns. romney took the opportunity to counter offensive really going after president obama for his assertion that a government system needs to be designed that could pool resources to better affect the redistribution. romney went at him hard today, as did all republicans with ads and videos and direct mail and radio and tv commercials. watch. >> this idea of redistribution follows from the idea that if you have a business you didn't build it someone else did that the president saying yes he believes in redistribution. i don't. i believe the way to lift people and to help people have higher incomes is not to take from some and give to others. but to create wealth for all of us. well, the romney campaign plans to release ads, videos as i said and around the country trying to add it in congressional and senate races thinking it could be a unifying battle cry for the final six weeks. >> that said some conservatives are is still

. carl cameron has mitt romney's response from the campaign trail. jennifer griffin assesses the situation in the middle east and northern africa. we begin with the chief white house correspondent ed henry on the president's reaction today. good evening, ed. >> good evening, bret. tonight, the president is blasting mitt romney for his criticism of the administration's initial response. mr. obama telling cbs "60 minutes" that mr. romney has a tendency to shoot first and aim later. >> in cold blood, four americans murdered by a mob in benghazi. in a bat that lasted four hours on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. including u.s. ambassador to libya chris stevens. the first american ambassador killed in the line of duty since 1979. raising alarm bells about american outposts all around the globe. >> i've directed my administration to increase the security at diplomatic posts around the world. make no mistake, we will work with the libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people. >> mr. are early signs the attack was planned and the protest

administration. campaign carl cameron live in fairfax, virginia where governor romney held a rally earlier. he was back on offensive today, wasn't he? >> oh, sure. it was pretty aggressive for mitt romney from the very beginning of his remarks, he began talking about the situation in north africa, expressed his regret about the terrible loss of american citizens and the cost of the upheaval over there. and fairly short order began talking about the type of leadership he would offer and criticized president obama for his defense cuts. it's been a fairly standard part of mitt romney's attack on the president and today went so far as to say that under the president, the u.s. would give up for the first time in more than 70 years, its military preparedness to fight wars on two fronts. listen. >> ever since fdr we've had the capacity to be engaged in two conflicts at once. and he's saying, no we're going to cut that back to one conflict. if i'm president of the united states, we will restore our military commitment and keep america the strongest military in the world! >> romney has taken a lot of h

was overshadowed bay long awaited disclosure from the top republicans. chief political correspondent carl cameron explains. >> after months of pressure, mitt romney released his 2011 tax returns on the friday afternoon. the documents show the romney gross adjusted mostly investment income totaled $13.6 million for the year. they paid tax rate of 14.1%. the romney donation to charity $4 million was a third of the income, but they only claimed deduction of $2.25 million. governor romney declared the tax rate had never been less than 13%, taking deductible for half of the charitable deductions last year kept it accurate. president obama released his 2011 tax return in april showing adjusted gross income of $700,000. he paid $162,000 in taxes for effective tax rate of 20.5%. also released by the romney campaign today, notized letter from the romney tax preparer to showing from 1990 to 2009 his average tax rate was 20.2%. both romney and paul ryan released medical records indicating they're in excellent health. all this on a day in which the battle escalated. in nevada where the polls are virtually ti

romney trailing by 4. campaign carl cammeron live in boston now. how are the candidates preparing for the debates. >> they can be real decision makers for the folks and an awful lot of undecides will begin to make them on what happens this wednesday. president obama will be going to nevada for a lot of his debate preps starting at the end of this weekend. and he has been rehearsing with john kerry. the senator from massachusetts and there will be some questions and a lot riding on it. john kerry has asked for serious answers and accounting for what's happened in libya the last couple of days. mr. romney has been sparring with rob portman the senator from ohio with mock debates. he will spend literally the next four days off the campaign trail heading preparing for it he will head to denver on monday. debate preps in boston. more closed door rehearsals leading up to wednesday. knows this is a big opportunity for him to regain momentum having slid in the polls for several weeks now. he talked a little bit on campaign plane as he was on his way back from philadelphia to boston where
headquarters with carl cameron. we understand that romney is prepare for example wednesday's debate. any word on when we can expect. >> reporter: he's been preparing, arguably for seven years or more, but very, very aggressive in the last few months. he will go mind the doors and do additional rehearsing, talking with the staff about how to do this. the evolution has changed a little bit. he has been doing a lot of mock debates with ohio senator rob portman, thrs but there is a long-standing process where he does q&a with his staff, trying to hone the rhetoric. the truth of the matter is, as handicap ors both sides of the aisle watch, have you the folks from the president obama trying to lower his expectations and the romney camp trying to lower the idea of a break-out moment f. you can get him to expect him to mediocre and he does reasonable, he will come out. but one-liners and zingers are not what changes mine -- minds. a lot of the times, it is not what is saz said, but the demeanor. the famous debates between george bush and al gore, and alo gore appeared to get huffy and hottie and frus

: chief political correspondent carl cameron is live in jacksonville, florida with more for us now. hi, carl. >> reporter: good afternoon, mitt romney this morning both grieving and morning the loss of american officials overseas and criticizing the obama administration for its handling of all of this. last night mr. romney read a statement from the u.s. embassy in cairo,egypt in which they had said that the u.s. does not support the type of movie trailer that the extremists say sparked their attacks on u.s. missions and other places across the country. when mr. romney saw that initial response from the u.s. embassy in cairo he was quite critical and said that now is not the time to be apologizing. there has been kreu criticism overnight of him for having got even in too soon and sort of stuck his foot in his mouth and pulled the trigger on criticism politically in the case of an international crisis unfolding. he said the statement from the u.s. embassy in cairo was taken off the web by the white house. the the administration said at one point it didn't reflect the u.s. position in al
